Artists Atelier Gallery Presents AAC Photography Salon
Artists Atelier Gallery and Studios

Artist's Reception Sep 19 12pm- 3pm

The Artists Atelier Gallery and Studios are proud to present the work of the photographic artists from the Atlanta Artist Center's Photography Salon. This is a group of dedicated photographers who strive for studied artistic expression, while maintaining exacting technical excellence. Members regularly achieve juried placements and awards for photographic work that not only, "pushes the envelope," but helps define it. Photographs using traditional processes, new processes and experimental processes will be featured.

"We have found that the association with a group of outstanding artists in all media, such as those at the Artists Atelier has broadened and nurtured our creativity and challenged our thinking about what is possible with photography," said H. Gay Allen, Founder and Chairman of the salon.

The Artists Atelier is a working artists' studio where Georgia painters, sculptors and photographers create display and sell their work to emerging and advance collectors. The Atelier was founded by well-known artist Ouida Canaday in 1985 and was the first artist co-op in Atlanta.

The public is invited to attend one of two receptions, either Saturday, September 19, or Saturday, October 17, from 12 noon until 3 p.m. These events are a part of Miami Circle's Art Walk.

Reception of Atlanta Artist Center Photography Salon Show
Atlanta Artists Center

Artist's Reception Oct 11 4- 6pm

Atlanta Artists Center Photographic Celebration will exhibit the juried artworks of the Atlanta Artist Center's Photography Salon.

"We have found that the association with a group of outstanding artists in all media, such as those at the Atlanta Artists Center has broadened and nurtured our creativity and challenged our thinking about what is possible with photography," said H. Gay Allen, Founder and Chairman of the salon.

"My primary goal in forming and conducting the salon for the last 7/8 years was to enable photographers who have the technical skills required to produce fine art photography, grow their understanding and use of the principles of design. Our practice of art is much the same as that of other artists, we just use different tools.

The show was judged by Tony Casadonte, Gallery Director of Lumiere Fine Art Photography Gallery.

Featuring work by: Juliana DeRosa

Exhibition Sep 29 - Nov 14

Auburn University Student Juliana DeRosa explores the many details of the age old craft of hand building pottery through photography. Her refreshing approach to the simple art of sculpting clay has rendered a body of work that speaks volumes to how clay can be transformed from mud to simple and ornate vessels. Juliana's attention to detail and love of her craft is captured through the lens of her camera. The masterful mix of texture, glaze and lighting provide for a perfect blend of Primitive meets Modern. She specifically focuses on the transition of the mud into the finished vessel. Juliana's exhibit, "Mud " reflects on the simplicity of the sculptured objects and reveals a natural beauty that only Mother Earth could provide.

Barron, Hastings Huggins and Alexandra Marrero are explorations of this journey. They traverse different times, locations, moods and settings and portray personal celebrations, quests and examinations of and by the artists. They are introspective, atmospheric and unpredictable; asking us to question how we perceive and choose to represent ourselves.

Masao Yamamoto

Masao Yamamoto: New Work, Kawa=Flow + John Chiara: Mississippi
Jackson Fine Art
Featuring work by: John Chiara, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Masao Yamamoto

Opening Reception Sep 18 6- 8pm

Jackson Fine Art is pleased to exhibit new works by Masao Yamamoto and John Chiara throughout October. Yamamoto is known for his snapshot-sized monochromatic works, often presented in installations by the hundreds. His use of mixed media techniques and aged texturing recalls "memories dropping out of drawers." Recently, Yamamoto has been focusing on his Kawa=Flow series, emphasizing individual photographs as well as the collective entity.

San Francisco-based artist John Chiara combines photography and sculpture to create first-generation unique prints - without the use of film. Shooting with a handbuilt camera on a flatbed trailer, Chiara exposes and manipulates his images in situ. We're excited to bring Chiara's Mississippi photographs, taken over the course of one year in Coahoma County, MS, to the south.

Both exhibitions open with a reception and artist talk September 18-19 and will be on view throughout October as Atlanta Celebrates Photography.

1960 Now
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia
Featuring work by: Sheila Pree Bright

Opening Reception Sep 25 6:30- 8:30pm

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia presents Sheila Pree Bright's exhibition: "1960 Now." Sheila Pree Bright, born 1967, is a fine art photographer based in Atlanta. Her large-scale works combine a wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary culture, while challenging perceptions of identity. "1960 Now" is a documentary project showing images of past and present figures of the Civil Rights Movement. This work is an evolution of "1960 Who," a photographic portraiture street series that depicted unknown youth leaders of the Civil Rights Movement from 50 years ago, who took a stand for human rights. Sheila Pree Bright is a 2014/2015 Working Artist Project winner. Each funded year, MOCA GA holds a metro-wide competition to select three working artists based on their talent, professionalism, and their proven ability to complete the project. The MOCA GA Working Artist Project is a year long program that supports metropolitan Atlanta visual artists, expands the Museum's mission, and strengthens the arts and cultural component of Atlanta. Other 2014/2015 Working Artist Project winners, Jonathan Bouknight and Sarah Emerson, will also present solo exhibitions.

Pace Academy - Fine Arts Center
Featuring work by: Kathryn Kolb

Lecture & Exhibition Oct 29, Doors open at 6:00, lecture at 7pm.

Thurs, Oct 29, doors open at 6pm to view exhibit, lecture starts at 7pm, followed by a book signing

After photographic beginnings in journalism photography, since the mid-1990s, Kathryn Kolb has focused her camera's lens on the natural forms of trees, plants and natural landscapes. With painstaking attention to composition, Kathryn finds images that resonate with the symmetries found within the fractal architecture of nature. As one viewer put it, "she is playing visual jazz with her camera."

Kathryn will discuss her own journey following nature's designs that includes discussion of the layers of design we respond to when looking at images, and how our right and left-brain hemispheres shape the way we view photographs. In addition to her own work, Kathryn will show the work of other artists that illustrate her thoughtful observations on viewing photographs, from the viewfinder to the final print.

Symmetries of Nature
Pace Academy - Fine Arts Center
Featuring work by: Kathryn Kolb

Artist's Talk Oct 29 7- 9pm

With painstaking attention to composition, Kathryn Kolb finds images that resonate with the symmetries found within the fractal architecture of nature. Blending abstract design with details of "realness" she creates images that are perhaps more at home in the genre of painting than photography. Her goal is not so much to tell nature's story by illustrating scenes, but to reveal the universal forms that create meanings within scenes, which she discovers at times in the most ordinary places. Her keen observations and sense of enthusiasm come through with her use of design and lighting. The result is a sense of becoming engaged with nature's swirling, complex perfection that pervades her work in a subtle but addicting way. Kathryn's photographs in this show illustrate the geometric symmetry found in nature as well as the evolution of her photographic eye to more complex forms and compositional design patterns over time.

This exhibition by the photography students of the Portfolio Center follows local nonprofits to tell the stories of those people who have devoted themselves to helping others and the people they serve. If you knew you had one year to live what would you change? It's not about saving the world but more importantly about making a difference.

BOTTLE. BOOK. BOX.
Wing & A Prayer Studio
Featuring work by: Corinne Adams

Open Studio Oct 1 1- 5pm

I have always been drawn to containers -- bottles, boxes, jars, vases, bowls -- even baskets and gourds. I have carved gourds, built dream boxes and spirit houses, collected assorted glass bottles and delighted in arranging them in new configurations. So what happens when you put a photograph in a bottle? A book? A box? Something precious is held more closely, protected, questioned and assigned valued. The collaboration innately invites the viewer to an intimate conversation. Like a good marriage, the two partners join to produce something new and unexpected. These pairings of photographs and containers evolved in a stream-of-consciousness process. They feel like my dreams, easy to decode on the exterior but with many possible layers of meaning. I invite you to the conversation, knowing that you bring your own container of ideas to the table. As you engage your imagination and become my partner, new thoughts and dreams will be transported into the container that is our world. In the end, they cannot be contained.
