Opening Reception
Sep 25 6:30- 9:30pm
'I am' presents a collection of photographs inspired by that longtime question: Who am I? There are a myriad of ways to reflect on and present this question. The works by Sandrine Arons, Rose M. Barron, Hastings Huggins and Alexandra Marrero are explorations of this journey. They traverse different times, locations, moods and settings and portray personal celebrations, quests and examinations of and by the artists. They are introspective, atmospheric and unpredictable; asking us to question how we perceive and choose to represent ourselves.

AIR Serenbe & Jackson Fine Art welcome Andrew Moore to Georgia for a residency to support his most recent body of work that captures the American South. Throughout Moore's 35-year photographic career, he has positioned himself at the forefront of contemporary photography, capturing places of historical significance at times of transition. His work in Cuba, Russia, and post-recession Detroit has garnered international attention; now his interest has turned to a regional exploration of the United States, particularly the American South, an area that has fascinated him since he first began to take pictures. Auburn University Student Juliana DeRosa explores the many details of the age old craft of hand building pottery through photography. Her refreshing approach to the simple art of sculpting clay has rendered a body of work that speaks volumes to how clay can be transformed from mud to simple and ornate vessels. Juliana's attention to detail and love of her craft is captured through the lens of her camera. The masterful mix of texture, glaze and lighting provide for a perfect blend of Primitive meets Modern. She specifically focuses on the transition of the mud into the finished vessel. Juliana's exhibit, "Mud " reflects on the simplicity of the sculptured objects and reveals a natural beauty that only Mother Earth could provide.

I have always been drawn to containers -- bottles, boxes, jars, vases, bowls -- even baskets and gourds. I have carved gourds, built dream boxes and spirit houses, collected assorted glass bottles and delighted in arranging them in new configurations. So what happens when you put a photograph in a bottle? A book? A box? Something precious is held more closely, protected, questioned and assigned valued. The collaboration innately invites the viewer to an intimate conversation. Like a good marriage, the two partners join to produce something new and unexpected. These pairings of photographs and containers evolved in a stream-of-consciousness process. They feel like my dreams, easy to decode on the exterior but with many possible layers of meaning. I invite you to the conversation, knowing that you bring your own container of ideas to the table. As you engage your imagination and become my partner, new thoughts and dreams will be transported into the container that is our world. In the end, they cannot be contained.
