Birth of a Warrior
The Xchange Gallery at the Arts Exchange
Featuring work by: Raymond McCrea Jones

Opening Reception & Book Signing Oct 2 7- 9pm

This solo exhibition presented by the Arts Exchange features photographs from "Birth of a Warrior: Ten Weeks in Basic Training" by Raymond McCrea Jones published by University Press of New England imprint ForeEdge, September 2015.

The stunning photographs in "Birth of a Warrior" chronicle the transformation of 162 young men from across the country into U.S. Army Delta Company 2/47. From four in the morning until late at night, through arrival, processing, outfitting, marching, inspection, drill, physical training, combat training, and live-fire exercises, Jones documents an astonishing metamorphosis. Granted unprecedented access to the lives of these recruits and the NCOs responsible for their basic training, he photographs everything from their first haircuts to the tossing of their caps at graduation. Birth of a Warrior is both their story and our story: a profound look at the culture and humanity of those who go off to war.

Raymond McCrea Jones is a photographer and filmmaker based in Atlanta. He has worked for institutions like The New York Times and CNN; his clients include brands such as Georgia Pacific and Delta; and his photographs have appeared in publications around the world. Jones is represented by Redux Pictures and the Lisa Ekus Group.

Transcendent
Collective One Gallery
Featuring work by: Hastings Huggins

Artist's Reception Oct 2, 7 - 10pm

Transcendent, a series of Final Works, are reflective, personal inventories of the past. They are re-experienced feelings of adolescent loss and trauma that were truths, once upon a time. Ironic discoveries, borne out of a sequential process make many of these works function as triggers. Triggers, as British science historian as alluded, that can change past perceptions and act as a stimulus for "new truths."

The build process for the Final Works is a sequential one. It begins with the creation of the chemograph, which, through a ballet of light exposure and chemical development, is allowed to mature. Particular chemographs are singled out and scanned at high resolutions to produce an archival document, which can then be optimized for further scrutiny, exploration and closer inspection. It is through the mining of these documents, using post-processing tools that the documents are decoded and become Final Works. Transcendent in their affect, many have become portals and at times harbors, which grant sputtering connections to the unconscious and to some of the most displaced memories.

BOTTLE. BOOK. BOX.
Wing & A Prayer Studio
Featuring work by: Corinne Adams

Open Studio Oct 1 1- 5pm

I have always been drawn to containers -- bottles, boxes, jars, vases, bowls -- even baskets and gourds. I have carved gourds, built dream boxes and spirit houses, collected assorted glass bottles and delighted in arranging them in new configurations. So what happens when you put a photograph in a bottle? A book? A box? Something precious is held more closely, protected, questioned and assigned valued. The collaboration innately invites the viewer to an intimate conversation. Like a good marriage, the two partners join to produce something new and unexpected. These pairings of photographs and containers evolved in a stream-of-consciousness process. They feel like my dreams, easy to decode on the exterior but with many possible layers of meaning. I invite you to the conversation, knowing that you bring your own container of ideas to the table. As you engage your imagination and become my partner, new thoughts and dreams will be transported into the container that is our world. In the end, they cannot be contained.

Fragments - Madeleine Soloway's Solvent Transfer and Digital Photographs
Binders Art Supply at Ponce City Market
Featuring work by: Madeleine Soloway

Artist's Reception Oct 2, 5-7:30pm

Atlanta based artist Madeleine Soloway's solvent transfer digital photographs draw inspiration from the beauty found in both gritty urban decay and the ever changing natural landscape. In a world continuously evolving by the transformative nature of time, it is the lingering remnants that hold captivating stories. The multi-layered images on exhibit create mysterious and dream-like narratives with an implied sense of history. The images reference the interplay between past and present, imagined and existing, transition and change.

Originally from Boston, Madeleine Soloway has been an exhibiting artist in the Atlanta area for the past 25 years and faculty member at The Paideia School. Soloway earned her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. With several solo exhibitions at the Jeremy Stone Gallery, San Francisco, in the early 1980's Soloway's work landed in many important private SF Bay Area collections, and developed a strong following. This is Madeleine Soloway's first solo exhibition in Atlanta.

Jason Maris

Proving Grounds
Gallery L1
Featuring work by: Jason Maris

Opening Reception Oct 3 6- 9pm

Proving Grounds is a series of black and white imagery of the United States Marine Corps recruit training on Parris Island SC. Large format prints from vintage plastic cameras from the early 60's are surreal yet hauntingly visceral. In 1994 Maris was embedded with recruits for 23 days and each image reflects this intimate perspective into the transformation our youngest men and women experience as they commit to a life of service to the American public. The large format prints are accompanied by fiber based black and white prints taken with a Hasselblad in 2014. Both series were taken while scouting locations for commercial projects. This is the first time the photographs have been exhibited in their entirety. Jason Maris is a freelance photographer and documentary filmmaker that has been based in Atlanta since 1993. This show is timely as we are still at war although many civilians do not acknowledge it. The show is also part of a larger documentary film project entitled Homemade which addresses issues surrounding Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injuries and Suicide.

Horizons and Intersections
Cy Matthews Semrau at 30 Trammell Street
Featuring work by: Cy Matthews Semrau

Opening Reception Oct 3 5:30- 8:30pm

With Intersections, the photographer describes people standing on street corners, crossing intersections and changing with every step the camera's perspective. These colorful, layered and abstracted, images illustrate any person's movement through time and space that is always becoming a memory, captured in one very brief moment by a photograph. Intersections is the second part in a series of photographs describing motion---first from the subject's perspective in black and white Horizons, and then, from the photographer's viewpoint by creating intense color in the images of people crossing Intersections.

Education of the Negro: a photographic study by Dr. Horace Mann Bond
Gallery L1
Featuring work by: Dr. Horace Mann Bond

Opening Reception Oct 3 6- 9pm

Born in 1904 in Nashville TN, Dr. Horace Mann Bond was an educator, activist, and scholar.

Beginning in the fall of 1929, Dr. Bond participated in a survey of black schools and the achievement of black children in North Carolina, Louisiana and Alabama. During this time, Bond visited more than 700 urban and rural black schools and administered standardized tests to nearly ten thousand children. The project was sponsored by the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Later, Dr. Bond and his wife, Julia Washington Bond, studied an isolated rural community, Star Creek, Louisiana. The Bonds were directed to observe and report on black schools, social and economic conditions and race relations in the rural South. These photographs are products of those studies.

The Schoolhouse series is accompanied by Bond family photographs that bare a stark contrast to the children Dr. Bond was photographing at the time.

This show was brought to life through the collaboration of James Bond, son of Dr. Horace Mann Bond, and Atlanta Master Printer, Barry Blackwell. We are honored as this is the first time these photographs have ever been printed and displayed to the public.

Flux Night 2015: Dream
Old Fourth Ward
Featuring work by: Courtesy the Artists, Aaron Gach, Chris Johnson, Otabenga Jones & Associates, Yoko Ono, Sheila Pree Bright, Pedro Reyes, Byette Ross Smith, Kamal Sinclair, Jennifer Wen Ma, Hank Willis Thomas

Exhibition Oct 3 7- 12am POSTPONED to Nov. 7th

Flux Projects's annual one-night public art celebration moves to the Old Fourth Ward and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District. Curator Nato Thompson's theme "Dream" pays homage to the surrounding neighborhood where Dr. King served as a leader in a movement that changed the world.

In August of 1963, at the culmination of The March on Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous speech that put his dreams for our nation into words. They were sweet, eloquent, hypnotic words that stirred the hopes of a country and its imagination. His dream asked for the best in people and in a sense, asked for the world as we knew it, to become the place we dreamed about.

Fifty-two years later Dr. King's call to action still rings true. Thompson has selected a diverse, provocative, and accomplished group of artists to create projects that invite us to continue dreaming of a more just and peaceful world. These projects will be a mix of visual and performance art that fills a five-block area and flows from the streets, through empty lots, up buildings, and into the sky.
