Opening Reception
Oct 23, 6-10pm
Home showcases work that both investigates and challenges the ideals of motherhood, family dynamics, and home while examining the intense and fiercely close relationship the artist shares with her mother. Within Collins' eccentric upbringing, "home" was never clearly defined. Throughout the artist's life, her mother has always been her constant-her one safe place where she finds acceptance and belonging. Collins' mother is her home. The act of photographing her mother has become a ritual for the artist. Anxiety and tenderness fuse together, creating complex relationships where boundaries and normalcy are regularly challenged.
Visually, this work functions as pictorial evidence that begins to tell a maternal story of mother and daughter. Within this process, Collins' and her mother learn from one another and their painful history in order to rewrite their own brand of personal truth while simultaneously creating a body of work, where their private moments become artifacts for public viewing. This work bears witness to an understanding: a private language between mother and daughter, where each party has assumed the role of an artist, and where the concept of home is understood.
